BACKGROUND

An engine indicating and crew alerting system, or EICAS, monitors the aircraft systems for the pilot and displays engine as well as airframe parameters. Traditional gauges are not used, other than a standby combination engine gauge in case of total system failure. EICAS is a two-monitor, two-computer arrangement with a display select panel; both monitors receive information from the same computer while the second computer stands by. The top, primary monitor provides full time primary engine parameters, namely engine pressure ratio, N1, and exhaust gas temperature, and it also carries advisories and warnings. Secondary engine parameters and nonengine system status appear on the bottom screen, which additionally serves maintenance diagnosis on the ground. EICAS automatically records the parameters of a failure event, and the crew can press an event record button to capture a period of flight for later study.
