BACKGROUND

Appendix B to 14 CFR part 43 tells the mechanic how a major repair or major alteration is recorded. The person performing the work executes FAA Form 337 at least in duplicate, gives a signed copy to the aircraft owner, and forwards a copy to the FAA Aircraft Registration Branch in Oklahoma City within 48 hours after the aircraft, airframe, engine, propeller, or appliance is approved for return to service. A certificated repair station may instead use a customer work order and a maintenance release, retaining its copy for at least two years. For extended-range fuel tanks installed in a passenger or baggage compartment, the form is executed in at least triplicate and one copy stays on board the aircraft.
