QUESTIONWhich document is issued by the FAA and lists the components, by make and model, that are eligible for installation on a product?

  1. AThe manufacturer's structural repair manual
  2. BThe manufacturer's approved flight manual
  3. CThe type certificate data sheet (TCDS)
Show the answer and explanation

Correct answer: C. The type certificate data sheet (TCDS)

  • A — incorrect The structural repair manual is written by the manufacturer's engineering department as a guideline for repairing common damage, not to list eligible components.
  • B — incorrect Flight manual material covers operating limitations and flight data; component eligibility is established by the type certificate data sheet.
  • C — correct The TCDS is issued by the FAA and provides the various components by make and model that are eligible for installation on the applicable product.

BACKGROUND

The type certificate data sheet is a formal description of an aircraft, engine, or propeller, issued by the FAA when it finds that the product meets the applicable certification requirements of 14 CFR. It lists the certification basis and eligible serial numbers along with airspeed limits, weight limits, control surface movements, engine make and model, minimum crew, and fuel type, plus horsepower, rpm, and thrust limits for engines and diameter and pitch for propellers. It also provides the various components, by make and model, that are eligible for installation on the product, which makes it the starting document for establishing conformity. During an airframe conformity and airworthiness inspection the mechanic obtains the latest revision of the TCDS and uses it as the verification document for the installed engines, propellers, and components.

STUDY TIP

When a question asks what proves an installed component is eligible, reach for the TCDS and use its latest revision. Repair manuals and flight manuals serve other purposes.

KEY POINTS

  • The TCDS is the FAA's formal description of a type-certificated product.
  • It lists limitations, eligible serial numbers, and eligible components.
  • Conformity inspections start from the latest TCDS revision.
