QUESTIONOn a turbine-powered aircraft that has no air cycle system, how is engine compressor bleed air used to heat the cabin?

  1. AIt is mixed with ambient or return air.
  2. BIt is cooled in the evaporator before use.
  3. CIt drives a turbine that warms the air.
Show the answer and explanation

Correct answer: A. It is mixed with ambient or return air.

  • A — correct Bleed air is mixed with ambient air or cabin return air and distributed throughout the aircraft through ducting.
  • B — incorrect An evaporator belongs to a vapor cycle cooling system; it plays no part in bleed air heating.
  • C — incorrect Bleed air can drive a turbo compressor for pressurization, but bleed air heating works by mixing hot bleed air with cooler air, not by driving a turbine.

BACKGROUND

Aircraft that use air cycle air conditioning obtain warm cabin air by mixing bleed air with the cold air produced by the air cycle machine expansion turbine. Some turbine-powered aircraft without air cycle systems still heat the cabin with engine compressor bleed air in simpler arrangements. The bleed air is mixed with ambient air or with cabin return air and is distributed throughout the aircraft by ducting. Mixing air valves, flow control valves, shutoff valves and other control valves are operated by switches in the flight deck. These systems are simple and work well as long as the valves, ducting and controls remain in operating condition.

STUDY TIP

Remember that every bleed air heating scheme comes down to mixing very hot air with cooler air in a controlled ratio. When troubleshooting, look first at the mixing, flow control and shutoff valves and their flight deck switches.

KEY POINTS

  • Bleed air heating mixes hot bleed air with ambient or cabin return air.
  • Mixed air is distributed through ducting controlled by flight deck switches.
  • Aircraft with air cycle systems get warm air by mixing bleed air with expansion turbine output.
