BACKGROUND

Seals are divided into three main classes: packings, gaskets, and wipers, and no single style of seal is satisfactory for every installation. Hydraulic seals used internally on a sliding or moving assembly are normally called packings, while those used between nonmoving fittings and bosses are normally called gaskets. V-ring packings are one-way seals that are always installed with the open end of the V facing the pressure, and they require a male and a female adapter to hold them in the proper position after installation. The seal retainer must also be torqued to the value specified by the manufacturer of the component being serviced, or the seal may not give satisfactory service. U-ring and U-cup packings are likewise one-way seals whose lip must face the pressure, and U-rings are primarily low-pressure packings for pressures of less than 1,000 psi.

Group the one-way seals together: V-rings, U-rings, and U-cups all present their open side to the pressure, while an O-ring seals effectively in both directions.
