QUESTIONIn the example service instructions for a large transport-type aircraft, the parking brake accumulator pressure must read at least how much before the hydraulic reservoirs are serviced?

  1. A2,500 psi
  2. B1,300 psi
  3. C3,000 psi, the system operating pressure
Show the answer and explanation

Correct answer: A. 2,500 psi

  • A — correct The listed preconditions for servicing include a parking brake accumulator pressure reading of at least 2,500 psi.
  • B — incorrect 1,300 psi is used elsewhere as an example of an accumulator preload charge, not as the parking brake accumulator reading required before servicing.
  • C — incorrect Full system operating pressure is not the stated requirement; the required minimum reading is lower than system pressure.

BACKGROUND

It is very important to follow the maintenance instructions when servicing a reservoir, because the airplane must be in the correct configuration for fluid quantity checks and filling to give correct results. Failure to place the aircraft in that configuration could result in overservicing of the reservoir, and the required configuration can be different for each aircraft. For a large transport-type aircraft, the example preconditions are that the spoilers are retracted, the landing gear is down, the landing gear doors are closed, the thrust reversers are retracted, and the parking brake accumulator pressure reads at least 2,500 psi. Each of these positions the actuators so that the fluid they hold is accounted for when the level is read.

STUDY TIP

Remember that the reason for the configuration list is fluid displacement into extended actuators; that logic makes the individual items much easier to recall.

KEY POINTS

  • Reservoir servicing requires a specified aircraft configuration.
  • The example transport configuration calls for at least 2,500 psi of parking brake accumulator pressure.
  • Servicing out of configuration risks overservicing the reservoir.
