BACKGROUND

Advanced composite materials, including prepreg, resin systems, cleaning solvents, and adhesives, can be hazardous, so personal protective equipment and the Safety Data Sheets must be understood before work begins. Eyes are protected from chemicals and flying objects by wearing safety glasses at all times, with a face shield added when mixing or pouring acids. Corrective contact lenses should never be worn in a shop, even with safety glasses, because some chemical solvents can melt the lenses and damage the eyes and because dust can get under the lenses. Respiratory protection is also required, since carbon fiber dust must not be breathed. Skin is protected with approved gloves, and single fibers from damaged components can easily penetrate and lodge in the skin.
