QUESTIONA hazardous material's risk diamond shows the number 4 in its red segment. This indicates the material is

  1. Avery hazardous in flammability.
  2. Bhighly reactive in contact with water.
  3. Cof little or no health hazard.
Show the answer and explanation

Correct answer: A. very hazardous in flammability.

  • A — correct Red is the flammability segment, and on the 0 to 4 scale a 4 means the material is very hazardous.
  • B — incorrect Water reactivity is shown in the white special-hazard segment by the letter W with a line through it, not by a number in the red block.
  • C — incorrect Health is the blue segment, and little or no hazard would be shown by a 0, not a 4.

BACKGROUND

The most observable part of a Safety Data Sheet (SDS) label, formerly called a Material Safety Data Sheet, is the four-color risk diamond. Red represents flammability, yellow reactivity, blue health, and white special hazards. The flammability, reactivity, and health blocks carry a number from 0 to 4, where 0 is little or no hazard and 4 means the material is very hazardous. The white segment holds a word or abbreviation such as RAD for radiation, ALK for alkali, Acid, CARC for carcinogenic, or a W with a line through it for high reactivity to water. The SDS itself gives the detailed chemical information and the actions to take on contact, and is required by OSHA.

STUDY TIP

Memorize the four colors and the meaning of the 0 to 4 scale; questions usually combine one color with one number.

KEY POINTS

  • Red = flammability, yellow = reactivity, blue = health, white = special hazard.
  • Numbers run 0 (little or no hazard) to 4 (very hazardous).
  • A W with a line through it in the white segment means high reactivity to water.
