Show the answer and explanation

Correct answer: C. a blend of kerosene and aviation gasoline.

  • A — incorrect JET A and JET A-1 are the kerosene fuels; JET B contains a gasoline component.
  • B — incorrect Black is the color used on jet fuel piping and fueling equipment; the fuel itself is clear or straw colored and is not dyed.
  • C — correct The handbook describes JET B as a blend of kerosene and AVGAS, unlike JET A and JET A-1, which are made from kerosene.

BACKGROUND

Two types of aviation fuel are in general use: aviation gasoline (AVGAS) for reciprocating engines and turbine fuel for turbojet and turboshaft engines. Three turbine fuels are generally used in civil aviation: JET A and JET A-1, both made from kerosene, and JET B, a blend of kerosene and AVGAS. Jet fuel is identified by the color black on piping and fueling equipment, but the fuel itself is clear or straw colored. AVGAS, by contrast, is dyed so that its color matches the color band on piping and equipment.

STUDY TIP

Separate the three jet fuels by base stock: A and A-1 are kerosene, B is kerosene plus gasoline.

KEY POINTS

  • JET A and JET A-1 are made from kerosene.
  • JET B is a blend of kerosene and AVGAS.
  • Jet fuel equipment is marked black; the fuel itself is clear or straw colored.
