QUESTIONA triangle that has one angle greater than 90° is classified as

  1. Aan obtuse triangle
  2. Ban acute triangle
  3. Can isosceles triangle
Show the answer and explanation

Correct answer: A. an obtuse triangle

  • A — correct An obtuse triangle has one angle greater than 90°.
  • B — incorrect An acute triangle has all three angles less than 90°.
  • C — incorrect Isosceles describes a triangle with two sides of equal length; it is a classification by sides, not by angles.

BACKGROUND

Triangles can be classified by their angles. An acute triangle has all three angles less than 90°, a right triangle has one right (90°) angle, and an obtuse triangle has one angle greater than 90°. Triangles are also classified by their sides: equilateral (three equal sides), isosceles (two equal sides) and scalene (three different sides). The two classification systems are independent of each other.

STUDY TIP

Sort the six triangle names into two groups, three by angle and three by side, so you never mix an angle term with a side term.

KEY POINTS

  • Obtuse: one angle greater than 90°.
  • Acute: all angles less than 90°; right: one 90° angle.
  • Equilateral, isosceles and scalene describe sides.
