Show the answer and explanation

Correct answer: A. divisor

  • A — correct Division finds how many times one number, called the divisor, is contained in another number, called the dividend.
  • B — incorrect The dividend is the number that contains the divisor, that is, the number being divided up.
  • C — incorrect The quotient is the result of the division.

BACKGROUND

Division is the process of finding how many times one number (the divisor) is contained in another number (the dividend). The result is the quotient, and any amount left over is the remainder. In the handbook example, 218 landing gear bolts divided among 7 aircraft gives 31 bolts each with 1 remaining: 218 is the dividend, 7 is the divisor, 31 is the quotient and 1 is the remainder. Addition produces a sum, subtraction a difference, and multiplication a product.

STUDY TIP

Learn the four result names (sum, difference, product, quotient) and the three parts of a division (dividend, divisor, remainder).

KEY POINTS

  • Divisor: the number contained in another.
  • Dividend: the number being divided; quotient: the result.
  • Leftover amount is the remainder.
