QUESTIONDuring an annual or 100-hour inspection, the engine mount is inspected for cracks, looseness of mounting, and what other condition?

  1. ACorrect torque of the propeller bolts.
  2. BLooseness of the engine to the mount.
  3. CDeterioration of the flexible vibration dampeners.
Show the answer and explanation

Correct answer: B. Looseness of the engine to the mount.

  • A — incorrect Bolts inspected for improper torquing and lack of safetying belong to the propeller group item, not the engine mount item.
  • B — correct Appendix D to part 43 lists the engine mount item as cracks, looseness of mounting, and looseness of engine to mount.
  • C — incorrect Flexible vibration dampeners are a separate listed item inspected for poor condition and deterioration, so this does not complete the engine mount item.

BACKGROUND

Appendix D to 14 CFR part 43 lists the scope and detail of items to be covered in an annual or 100-hour inspection, and § 43.15(c)(1) requires the person performing the inspection to use a checklist that includes that scope and detail. In the engine and nacelle group, the engine mount item reads: cracks, looseness of mounting, and looseness of engine to mount. Nearby items in the same group cover the engine section for evidence of oil, fuel, or hydraulic leaks, studs and nuts for improper torquing and obvious defects, internal engine for cylinder compression and for metal particles or foreign matter on screens and sump drain plugs, and flexible vibration dampeners for poor condition and deterioration. Knowing which item covers which defect keeps neighboring-item distractors from being confusing.

STUDY TIP

Read the engine and nacelle group of appendix D as a list and note that each item names its own defects; the mount item covers cracks and two kinds of looseness.
