QUESTIONBleed air for cabin pressurization is taken from the highest pressure stage of the compressor and is passed through an air conditioning unit before it enters the cabin. Why is that unit needed?

  1. AIts temperature is too high for cabin use
  2. BIts pressure is too low to pressurize a cabin
  3. CIt carries oil mist from the bearings
Show the answer and explanation

Correct answer: A. Its temperature is too high for cabin use

  • A — correct At the final compressor stage both pressure and air temperature are at a maximum, so the excess heat must be removed before the air reaches the cabin.
  • B — incorrect Air bled from the final stage is at maximum pressure, so lack of pressure is not the reason for conditioning it.
  • C — incorrect Bearing oil is kept in its normal path by the housing oil seals; the stated reason for conditioning bleed air is its excessive heat.

BACKGROUND

A secondary function of the compressor is to supply bleed air for various purposes in the engine and the aircraft. Bleed air can be taken from any of the compressor's pressure stages through small ports in the compressor case next to the stage being tapped, so different pressures and temperatures are available simply by choosing the stage. Air is often bled from the final or highest pressure stage because pressure and air temperature are both at a maximum there. When that air is used for cabin pressurization or any other purpose where excess heat would be uncomfortable or detrimental, it is sent through an air conditioning unit before entering the cabin. Common bleed air uses include cabin pressurization, heating and cooling, deicing and anti-icing, pneumatic engine starting, auxiliary drive units, and vortex dissipaters that break up ground vortices near low-mounted engine pods.

STUDY TIP

Remember that bleed port location sets both pressure and temperature, and that the highest stage gives the hottest air; memorize the list of bleed air applications.

KEY POINTS

  • Bleed air is tapped through small ports in the compressor case at a chosen stage.
  • The final stage gives maximum pressure but also maximum temperature, so cabin air is conditioned first.
  • Bleed air also serves anti-icing, pneumatic starting, auxiliary drive units, and vortex dissipaters.
