QUESTIONWhich combination of features characterizes an airport that is surrounded by Class C airspace?

  1. AAn operational control tower but no radar approach control service
  2. BAn operational control tower and a radar approach control
  3. CA published instrument approach but no operational control tower
Show the answer and explanation

Correct answer: B. An operational control tower and a radar approach control

  • A — incorrect Class C airports are serviced by a radar approach control, so a tower without that service does not meet the study guide's description of a Class C airport.
  • B — correct The study guide says Class C surrounds airports that have an operational control tower, are serviced by a radar approach control, and have a certain number of IFR operations or passenger enplanements.
  • C — incorrect Class C requires an operational control tower; an airport without a tower is not a Class C airport.

BACKGROUND

Class C airspace generally extends from the surface to 4,000 feet above the airport elevation. It surrounds airports that have an operational control tower, are serviced by a radar approach control, and have a certain number of instrument flight rules (IFR) operations or passenger enplanements. The airspace usually consists of a five nautical mile surface area and a ten nautical mile outer circle. A remote pilot must receive authorization before operating in Class C airspace.

STUDY TIP

Associate Class C with the combination of a control tower plus radar approach control; Class D has a tower but is not defined by radar service.

KEY POINTS

  • Class C airports have an operational control tower.
  • They are served by a radar approach control.
  • They have a certain level of IFR operations or passenger enplanements.
