BACKGROUND

Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations (14 CFR) part 107 governs small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS). Section 107.3 defines a small unmanned aircraft as an unmanned aircraft weighing less than 55 pounds on takeoff. The definition counts everything that is on board or otherwise attached to the aircraft, so cameras, batteries and any carried load are part of the takeoff weight. This is the loading limit that decides whether an operation falls under part 107 at all.

STUDY TIP

Remember the 55-pound figure and that it is measured at takeoff with all attachments included.

KEY POINTS

  • Small unmanned aircraft: less than 55 pounds on takeoff.
  • Everything on board or attached counts toward that weight.
  • The definition is in § 107.3.
