BACKGROUND

When the Automated Terminal Information Service (ATIS) is recorded, it is given a code, and the code changes with every ATIS update. The study guide gives the example of ATIS Alpha being replaced by ATIS Bravo, then Charlie the next hour, followed by Delta, progressing down the phonetic alphabet. Since ATIS is normally updated once per hour, the letter normally advances hourly, although it can change more often when local conditions warrant. A remote pilot monitoring the frequency can use the code to tell whether the information heard is current.
