QUESTIONA fly-away ends when the small unmanned aircraft strikes a parked car. The repair estimate is $1,200 for parts and labor, and no one is injured. Under § 107.9, what is required of the remote pilot in command?

  1. AReport the operation to the FAA no later than 10 calendar days afterward
  2. BReport the operation to the FAA within 24 hours, because property was damaged
  3. CNo report, because there was no injury and the aircraft is not a manned aircraft
Show the answer and explanation

Correct answer: A. Report the operation to the FAA no later than 10 calendar days afterward

  • A — correct Because the repair cost exceeds $500, the damage to property other than the aircraft meets § 107.9(b), and the report is due no later than 10 calendar days after the operation.
  • B — incorrect The deadline in § 107.9 is 10 calendar days, not 24 hours.
  • C — incorrect Injury is only one trigger; damage to other property costing more than $500 to repair also requires a report.

BACKGROUND

Section 107.9 requires a remote pilot in command to report certain safety events to the FAA no later than 10 calendar days after the operation. Two triggers apply: serious injury to any person or any loss of consciousness, and damage to any property other than the small unmanned aircraft. The property damage trigger has an exception when the cost of repair (including materials and labor) does not exceed $500, or when the fair market value of the property does not exceed $500 in the event of total loss. In this scenario the $1,200 repair estimate exceeds the $500 threshold, so the report is required. A fly-away that ends in a collision is a common way this rule comes into play.

STUDY TIP

For § 107.9, check two things in order: does the event meet a trigger (injury, loss of consciousness, or damage over $500), and if so, report within 10 calendar days.

KEY POINTS

  • § 107.9 reports are due no later than 10 calendar days after the operation.
  • Property damage must be reported unless repair cost or fair market value does not exceed $500.
  • Damage to the small unmanned aircraft itself does not count.
