QUESTIONA remote pilot has felt weak, tired, and irritable for several months, and a full night's sleep does not relieve it. According to the Remote Pilot Study Guide, what does this condition usually require?

  1. ARest after exertion and 8 hours of sound sleep
  2. BA well-balanced diet and a short break
  3. CTreatment by a physician
Show the answer and explanation

Correct answer: C. Treatment by a physician

  • A — incorrect That is the study guide's cure for acute fatigue; chronic fatigue is specifically described as not relieved by adequate rest and sleep.
  • B — incorrect Proper diet and rest prevent acute fatigue, but the study guide states that chronic fatigue is not relieved by proper diet and adequate rest.
  • C — correct Fatigue extending over a long period that is not relieved by proper diet and adequate rest is chronic fatigue, which the study guide says usually requires treatment by a physician.

BACKGROUND

The Remote Pilot Study Guide divides fatigue into acute and chronic categories. Acute fatigue is short term, a normal result of strenuous effort, excitement, or lack of sleep, and rest after exertion plus 8 hours of sound sleep ordinarily cures it. Chronic fatigue extends over a long period, usually has psychological roots, and is produced by continuous high stress levels. It is not relieved by proper diet and adequate rest and sleep and usually requires treatment by a physician. Symptoms can include weakness, tiredness, palpitations, breathlessness, headaches, irritability, and stomach or intestinal problems. Remote pilots who suspect chronic fatigue should consult a physician.

STUDY TIP

Use the time scale and the response to rest to tell acute from chronic fatigue.

KEY POINTS

  • Acute fatigue is cured by rest and 8 hours of sound sleep.
  • Chronic fatigue is not relieved by rest and usually needs a physician.
  • A remote pilot suffering fatigue should not operate a small UA.
