QUESTIONOn small aluminum alloy tubing identified by a painted color-code band, what color identifies 2024 aluminum alloy?

  1. AGreen
  2. BPurple
  3. CRed
Show the answer and explanation

Correct answer: C. Red

  • A — incorrect Green is the band color for 3003 aluminum alloy, a low-pressure general purpose tubing, not 2024.
  • B — incorrect Purple is the band color for 5052 aluminum alloy, not 2024.
  • C — correct The handbook's color code for aluminum alloy tubing lists red as the band color for 2024 alloy.

BACKGROUND

Before repairing aircraft tubing, a mechanic must positively identify the material, because alloys such as 1100, 3003, 5052-O, 6061-T6 and 2024-T3 cannot be told apart by sight. On large aluminum alloy tubing the alloy designation is stamped on the surface. On small tubing the designation is more often shown by a painted color code band not more than 4 inches wide, applied at the two ends and about midway between the ends. When a band has two colors, each color takes one-half of the band width. The handbook's color code assigns red to 2024, green to 3003, white to 1100 and purple to 5052, among others.

STUDY TIP

Memorize the single-color bands for the common alloys (1100 white, 3003 green, 2024 red, 5052 purple) and remember that two-color bands split the width evenly.

KEY POINTS

  • Small aluminum tubing is often identified by a painted color band not more than 4 inches wide.
  • Red identifies 2024 aluminum alloy; green is 3003 and white is 1100.
  • Two-color bands use one-half of the width for each color.
