BACKGROUND

Fatigue is a major human factor that has contributed to many maintenance errors resulting in accidents. The Aviation Maintenance Technician Handbook - General (FAA-H-8083-30B) identifies lack of sleep as the primary cause of fatigue and says the best remedy is to get enough sleep on a regular basis; it recommends eight to nine hours of daily sleep to avoid fatigue. Other suggestions include looking for symptoms of fatigue in oneself and others, having others check your work, avoiding complex tasks during the bottom of the circadian rhythm, and sleeping and exercising daily. The handbook cautions that countermeasures such as caffeine, pseudoephedrine and amphetamines may work for short periods but leave the underlying fatigue in place.

Remember the specific figure of eight to nine hours and that sleep, not stimulants, is the remedy the handbook endorses.
