QUESTIONWhy should carburetor heat not be used while starting the engine?

  1. ABackfiring could damage the heater valves
  2. BIt would flood the carburetor with raw fuel
  3. CIt would freeze the carburetor air filter
Show the answer and explanation

Correct answer: A. Backfiring could damage the heater valves

  • A — correct Carburetor heat should not be used while starting the engine in order to prevent damage to the heater valves in the case of backfire.
  • B — incorrect Carburetor heat warms the incoming air; it does not add fuel to the carburetor.
  • C — incorrect Heated air does not freeze the filter; filter icing comes from surface icing or a rain-soaked element in flight.

BACKGROUND

Induction system ice is prevented or removed by raising the temperature of the air passing through the system, using a carburetor heat system located upstream near the induction system inlet. Heat is collected by a duct surrounding the exhaust manifold and admitted through a control valve operated by a push-pull control in the flight deck. When there is no danger of icing, the heat control is normally kept in the cold position, and it is best left there when dry snow or ice particles are in the air, because melted moisture may refreeze on the induction system walls. To prevent damage to the heater valves in the case of backfire, carburetor heat should not be used while starting the engine. During ground operation, only enough carburetor heat should be used to give smooth engine operation.

STUDY TIP

Group the carburetor heat cautions together: none during start because of backfire, cold with dry snow, and minimum on the ground.

KEY POINTS

  • Carburetor heat is not used during start because a backfire could damage the heater valves.
  • With dry snow or ice particles, leave the control in cold to avoid refreezing meltwater.
  • On the ground, use only enough heat for smooth engine operation.
