QUESTIONIn the PEAR model of maintenance human factors, the environment element refers to which two environments?

  1. AThe physical workplace and the regulatory environment set by the FAA
  2. BThe physical workplace and the organizational environment
  3. CThe indoor shop environment and the outdoor ramp environment
Show the answer and explanation

Correct answer: B. The physical workplace and the organizational environment

  • A — incorrect The second PEAR environment is the organizational environment within the company, described in terms of cooperation, communication, shared values and culture, not the regulatory environment.
  • B — correct The handbook says there are at least two environments in aviation maintenance: the physical workplace on the ramp, in the hangar or in the shop, and the organizational environment that exists within the company.
  • C — incorrect Shop, hangar and ramp are all parts of the single physical environment; the second environment in PEAR is the organizational one.

BACKGROUND

PEAR is a mnemonic used for more than a decade to characterize human factors in aviation maintenance: People who do the job, Environment in which they work, Actions they perform, and Resources necessary to complete the job. Under Environment, the Aviation Maintenance Technician Handbook - General (FAA-H-8083-30B) says there are at least two environments that a human factors program must address. The physical environment includes temperature, humidity, lighting, noise control, cleanliness and workplace design. The organizational environment is less tangible and involves cooperation, communication, shared values, mutual respect and the culture of the company.

STUDY TIP

Know the four PEAR elements and be able to name the two environments; test writers like to contrast the tangible physical workplace with the intangible organizational culture.

KEY POINTS

  • PEAR stands for People, Environment, Actions and Resources.
  • The physical environment covers temperature, humidity, lighting, noise, cleanliness and workplace design.
  • The organizational environment covers cooperation, communication, shared values and company culture.
