BACKGROUND

Section 91.409(d) of 14 CFR part 91 establishes the procedures for progressive inspections. Each registered owner or operator wishing to use such a program must submit a written request to the FAA Flight Standards District Office (FSDO) having jurisdiction over the area where the applicant is located. The owner must also provide a certificated mechanic holding an inspection authorization, a certificated airframe repair station, or the aircraft manufacturer to supervise or conduct the inspection, a current inspection procedures manual, adequate housing and equipment, and current technical information. If the program is later discontinued, the owner must immediately notify the local FSDO in writing.

STUDY TIP

Both starting and stopping a progressive inspection program involve the FSDO in writing; the request comes first, the discontinuance notice comes last.
