QUESTIONA certificated airframe and powerplant (A&P) mechanic who does not hold an inspection authorization (IA) is asked to perform both a 100-hour inspection and an annual inspection. Which inspection may this mechanic conduct?

  1. AOnly the 100-hour inspection
  2. BOnly the annual inspection
  3. CBoth the 100-hour and the annual inspection
Show the answer and explanation

Correct answer: A. Only the 100-hour inspection

  • A — correct A certificated A&P mechanic may conduct a 100-hour inspection, but an annual inspection must be conducted by an A&P mechanic who holds an inspection authorization.
  • B — incorrect The annual inspection is the one that requires an inspection authorization; a mechanic without IA cannot perform it.
  • C — incorrect Although the scope of the two inspections is identical, the annual inspection requires an IA, which this mechanic does not hold.

BACKGROUND

The annual inspection and the 100-hour inspection are identical in scope and detail, both following Appendix D to part 43. The handbook identifies two significant differences between them. The first is the person authorized to perform them: a certificated A&P mechanic can conduct a 100-hour inspection, whereas an annual inspection must be conducted by a certificated A&P mechanic holding an inspection authorization (IA). The second difference is the authorized overflight of up to 10 hours beyond the 100-hour limit to reach the place of inspection.

STUDY TIP

When a scenario names a mechanic without IA, the annual inspection is out of reach; the 100-hour inspection is not.

KEY POINTS

  • 100-hour inspection: any certificated A&P mechanic may perform it.
  • Annual inspection: requires an A&P mechanic with inspection authorization (IA).
  • Scope and detail of the two inspections are otherwise identical.
