BACKGROUND

Section 43.11 of 14 CFR part 43 governs record entries for inspections conducted under parts 91 and 125 and §§ 135.411(a)(1) and 135.419. The person approving or disapproving the aircraft for return to service must record the type of inspection and a brief description of its extent, the date of the inspection and the aircraft total time in service, and the signature, certificate number, and kind of certificate held. The entry also carries a certifying statement; for an airworthy aircraft it reads, or is similar to, a certification that the aircraft was inspected in accordance with the named type of inspection and determined to be in airworthy condition. The Aviation Maintenance Technician Handbook–General summarizes the entry as answering what, when, and who, and notes that the when includes total time in service. This differs from a § 43.9 maintenance entry, which requires only the date of completion.
