BACKGROUND

Section 43.9(a) sets the basic content of a maintenance record entry for any maintenance, preventive maintenance, rebuilding, or alteration. Paragraph (d) adds that, in addition to that entry, major repairs and major alterations must be entered on a form, and the form disposed of, in the manner prescribed in appendix B to part 43, by the person performing the work. Appendix B identifies that form as FAA Form 337, Major Repair and Alteration, executed at least in duplicate, with a signed copy given to the owner and a copy forwarded to the FAA Aircraft Registration Branch. FAA-H-8083-30B chapter 2 notes that major repairs and alterations must also be supported by approved data.
