BACKGROUND

Appendix B to 14 CFR part 43 governs the recording of major repairs and major alterations. Except for the alternatives it lists, each person performing a major repair or major alteration must execute FAA Form 337 at least in duplicate, give a signed copy to the aircraft owner, and forward a copy to the FAA Aircraft Registration Branch in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, within 48 hours after the aircraft, airframe, engine, propeller, or appliance is approved for return to service. FAA-H-8083-30B chapter 2 gives the same 48-hour deadline (describing the copy as going to the local FAA office), notes that the original goes to the owner/operator, and adds that maintenance facilities and mechanics are encouraged to keep a copy for their own records.
