Correct answer: A. 3 statute miles

  • A — correct § 107.29(a)(2) requires anti-collision lighting visible for at least 3 statute miles with a flash rate sufficient to avoid a collision.
  • B — incorrect One statute mile is less than the 3-statute-mile visibility the regulation requires.
  • C — incorrect The regulation sets the minimum at 3 statute miles, not 5.

BACKGROUND

Section 107.29 governs operation of small unmanned aircraft systems at night and during civil twilight. Under paragraph (a), night operations require that the remote pilot in command has completed an initial knowledge test or training under § 107.65 after April 6, 2021, and that the small unmanned aircraft has lighted anti-collision lighting visible for at least 3 statute miles with a flash rate sufficient to avoid a collision. Paragraph (b) requires the same lighting during civil twilight. The lighting lets other aircraft see the small unmanned aircraft, and the pilot may reduce its intensity, but not extinguish it, when operating conditions make that safer.

STUDY TIP

Pair the two lighting facts in § 107.29: visible for at least 3 statute miles, with a flash rate sufficient to avoid a collision.

KEY POINTS

  • Night anti-collision lighting must be visible for at least 3 statute miles.
