Correct answer: C. 7:44 p.m.

  • A — incorrect The civil twilight period lasts 30 minutes after official sunset, not 60 minutes.
  • B — incorrect Evening civil twilight begins, rather than ends, at official sunset under § 107.29(c)(2).
  • C — correct § 107.29(c)(2) defines evening civil twilight outside Alaska as beginning at official sunset and ending 30 minutes after official sunset; 7:14 p.m. plus 30 minutes is 7:44 p.m.

BACKGROUND

Section 107.29(b) requires lighted anti-collision lighting visible for at least 3 statute miles during periods of civil twilight. Paragraph (c) defines civil twilight for the purposes of that rule. Outside Alaska, morning civil twilight begins 30 minutes before official sunrise and ends at official sunrise, and evening civil twilight begins at official sunset and ends 30 minutes after official sunset. In Alaska, civil twilight is the period defined in the Air Almanac. With a 7:14 p.m. sunset, the evening period runs from 7:14 p.m. to 7:44 p.m. After that, the operation is at night and the additional night requirements of § 107.29(a) apply, including the same anti-collision lighting.

STUDY TIP

Compute civil twilight as 30 minutes on the dark side of official sunrise and sunset, and remember that Alaska uses the Air Almanac definition instead.

KEY POINTS

  • Evening civil twilight runs from official sunset to 30 minutes after sunset outside Alaska.
  • Morning civil twilight runs from 30 minutes before official sunrise to sunrise.
