Correct answer: B. Appendix D to 14 CFR part 43

  • A — incorrect Appendix E to part 43 contains the procedures for altimeter and static system tests, not the annual and 100-hour inspection items.
  • B — correct The handbook states that the scope and detail of items to be included in annual and 100-hour inspections is contained in Appendix D to part 43.
  • C — incorrect Section 91.409(d) establishes the procedures for progressive inspections; it does not list the items of an annual or 100-hour inspection.

BACKGROUND

The basic requirements for annual and 100-hour inspections are discussed in 14 CFR part 91. With some exceptions, all aircraft must have a complete inspection annually, and aircraft used for hire must have the same complete inspection every 100 hours. The scope and detail of the items to be covered are set out in Appendix D to part 43, which groups the aircraft into the fuselage and hull, cabin and cockpit, engine and nacelle, landing gear, wing, empennage, propeller, radio, and miscellaneous groups. A properly written checklist includes every item of Appendix D.

STUDY TIP

Remember the pairing: Appendix D of part 43 is the annual/100-hour item list, while Appendix E of part 43 covers altimeter and static system tests.

KEY POINTS

  • Annual and 100-hour inspections have identical scope and detail.
  • That scope is defined in Appendix D to 14 CFR part 43.
  • A good inspection checklist includes all Appendix D items.
